Street photography from Xinjiang, a Western province in China, which is traditionally inhabited by the Uyghur minority who are ethnically Turkic Muslim. I spent a month in Xinjiang as a volunteer to assist an HIV treatment program. At the time, Xinjiang was rapidly modernizing and changing due to a state-sponsored influx of Han Chinese immigrants. Newly constructed chunks of Chinese towers encircled and engulfed old town centers, displacing a traditional way of life.
