無為有處有還無

The title of the series comes from a couplet in the opening chapter of Dream of the Red Chamber, “假作真時真亦假,無為有處有還無”, which translates as "Truth becomes fiction when the fiction is true; Real becomes not-real where the unreal is real." To explore the space between aspiration and reality in modernized China, I photographed the weekend fashions of young Beijingers in 2007, the year before China's imminent coming-of-age party, the 2008 Beijing Olympics. I felt that this was a very specific moment in time for the Chinese - a period of transition in which Chinese aspirations will metamorphose and crystalize into a new reality with China on the world-stage.
