Candice Kwan lives and works in New York. Born in Hong Kong, she immigrated to the U.S. with her family when she was nine. She received her A.B. and M.D. from Harvard University, and M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in photography, video, and lens-related media. She works as both physician and artist.

14 imagesThe title of the series comes from a couplet in the opening chapter of Dream of the Red Chamber, “假作真時真亦假,無為有處有還無”, which translates as "Truth becomes fiction when the fiction is true; Real becomes not-real where the unreal is real." To explore the space between aspiration and reality in modernized China, I photographed the weekend fashions of young Beijingers in 2007, the year before China's imminent coming-of-age party, the 2008 Beijing Olympics. I felt that this was a very specific moment in time for the Chinese - a period of transition in which Chinese aspirations will metamorphose and crystalize into a new reality with China on the world-stage.
